Mockup generation
How a saved design renders onto a garment, and how that render seeds artwork V1.
Full guide: https://docs.printersfriend.com/operations/artwork
A saved design renders as a mockup: the design's layers composited onto a garment silhouette in the chosen colourway. Text, shapes and image layers all render, positioned exactly as they sit on the canvas.
Where mockups come from
- The online designer, when a customer or a staff member saves a design.
- Quote acceptance, when accepted lines carry a design. Each distinct design is rendered, filed in the asset library as a proof and uploaded as artwork version 1 automatically, so nobody re-uploads the customer's own work.
- Export, from the design itself, when you want the file rather than the workflow.
The garment colour
The silhouette takes the colourway's hex from the design, so a design saved against a black tee renders on black. A design with no colourway falls back to a dark grey rather than rendering on white and flattering the artwork.
Limits worth knowing
- Image layers over 5 MB are left out of the export. Embedding them inflates the file by a third again and breaks downstream rasterisers, so a very large placed image will be missing from the mockup while the rest renders. Downscale before placing.
- A mockup is a customer-facing visual, not a production file. Print-ready output comes from the proof file on the artwork version.
If the seeded V1 does not appear
The render runs after the quote conversion has committed, deliberately, so a rendering hiccup can never roll back or block the sale. If V1 is missing on a converted order, the conversion still succeeded: upload a proof by hand with Upload artwork version and carry on.
